But Why is it so Hard to Master Empathy?

Most of us are confident about learning new technical skills. However, many of us feel awkward and sometimes daunted by developing our interpersonal skills. Moreover, many people are self-conscious about discussing their own feelings, never mind anyone else’s. Never has this been so played out than on the current political stage. This is evident by the public feeling we hold for our leaders. While well respected and considered, leaders are indeed in need of empathy training. That is to equip them with tools to understand human behaviour.

It is fair to say, the majority of us have areas of struggle. When we’re stressed by work demands, lacking in sleep, or even hungry, we often display behaviours we are not proud of. When we feel threatened we often call upon behaviours that are reactionary and don’t help the situation. Without understanding these behaviours, we can not possibly be in the mind frame to be empathetic.
