Empathy Training deserves its buzz status of late. And leaders are wise to desire it for their businesses. But to succeed in making it part of your organisation’s DNA, you need to pay close attention to two entwined factors. That is, communication and human behaviour!
Empathy often belongs to a quiet majority.
At any moment, some individuals in an organisation are acting kindly while others are not. Additionally, some are working together while others are competing.
How do we know how to treat each other if we don’t understand each other?
Put simply, understanding other people’s emotions and behaviour is a crucial skill of a successful leader. Crucially, it enables us to resolve conflicts, build more productive teams, and improve our relationships. That is with with co-workers, clients and customers.

But Why Is It So Hard To Master Empathy?
Most of us are confident about learning new technical skills. However, many of us feel awkward and sometimes daunted by developing our interpersonal skills. Moreover, many people are self-conscious about discussing their own feelings, never mind anyone else’s. Never has this been so played out than on the current political stage. This is evident by the public feeling we hold for our leaders. While well respected and considered, leaders are indeed in need of empathy training. That is to equip them with tools to understand human behaviour.
It is fair to say, the majority of us have areas of struggle. When we’re stressed by work demands, lacking in sleep, or even hungry, we often display behaviours we are not proud of. When we feel threatened we often call upon behaviours that are reactionary and don’t help the situation. Without understanding these behaviours, we can not possibly be in the mind frame to be empathetic.
TIP: use a Profiling tool, such as DISC, to identify your Leaders’ motivators and behavioural styles.
What Is Empathy?
Put simply, empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Many people confuse empathy with sympathy.

Can You Learn Empathy?
Short answer – yes! Empathy is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets. But first your empathy muscle needs to be trained in the right way! Otherwise, it will not function at its optimum level. Below are 7 Best Ways to Strengthen Your Empathy Muscle and how with Sparkle’s Q.U.A.L.I.T.Y. Empathy Training your leadership team will be admired and respected.
1. Question Everything: how else do we begin to understand what we don’t know.
2. Understand Behaviour: to know how to communicate with the four different behaviour styles in certain ways to increase empathy.
3. Actively Listen: very different to hearing what people are saying to you.
4. Life for a Day: if someone bothers you, think why? Spend one day in their shoes to find out.
5. Interact with Different People: to empathise with others we need to be exposed to their ways.
6. Teach: pass on your Empathy Training to others to create an empathetic workplace.
7. Yes More: be more open to acceptance – less of No, but and more of Yes, and in your day to day interactions.
